Trendy bedroom decor

March 21, 2011 under Trendy girls room

My daughter Anabel had outgrown the room decor she had and wanted a change from
the fairies and lilac theme she had in her bedroom.  She wanted room decor that
was more grown up, trendy and stylish.   After deciding she would like
her bedroom in a zebra print theme, I wanted to share with you some of the details
on decisions and planning that went into the room and also some photos
of how the room turned out in the end.

Trendy and stylish room decor for girls

Anabel in her newly styled bedroom

After deciding on a theme of zebra print, we needed to add a colour to the
black and white to soften the look and add a contrast.  We needed a
nice vibrant colour and after considering some colours Anabel decided on
lime green.  We needed to get the balance right too, this is really important
when styling a room.  I ordered some zebra print fabric to go behind the glass
doors in the wardrobes, to balance this out we would go for lime green curtains.

Handmade and hand painted wall decor which matches the theme

We would need some trendy wall art  which would bring a designer look to
the room and Anabel knew just the person to create this!

So, I decided that a set of three canvases would look great on the wall as you
walk in and these pictures would be a combination of zebra print and lime green
with my wonderful eye-catching 3d flowers.

Now we have a headboard it

really finishes off the bed nicely

Lime green headboard for a girls room

Lime green headboard completes the bed

On her bed, Anabel has a zebra print duvet cover and lime green throw.  Handmade cushions from Craft on Canvas style the bed and add texture.  A headboard would finish the bed off beautifully but we are still looking and deciding on this but will possibly get our local upholsterer to custom made one for us.  This may sound expensive but actually can work out the same as buying a quality headboard.

We had been looking around for a desk that would fit in with the fitted wardrobes and eventually found one at Ikea, it looks great but most importantly, it is practical and will hopefully encourage her to do her homework!

I added these over the door hooks and they are great for bags, dressing gown etc.  There are lots of different styles in various colours so it’s easy to find one that will fit in well with any room decor.

Some extra accessories on shelves would complete the look.
Anabel is so excited with the look of her room and proud that she has played a part
in designing the room.

Children and art

March 18, 2011 under Children and art
Children of all ages should be encouraged to be creative

My girls have always loved being creative

I believe it is so important to encourage children to enjoy many kinds of art and creative play.
Usually, encouragement is not required as children love to take part in arts and crafts,
the idea of creating something and seeing it develop will be so exciting for children of all ages.
Play is natural for children and art and play go together.

Children won’t take long in deciding what they will paint or create, this is great,
their minds will work quickly to develop a picture, they will decide what colours
or materials they want to use on their new masterpiece!

Children love to explore and investigate which is all part of art, they will love the
discovery process of art.

It is important to remember that there should be no right or wrong way for children
to paint, draw or create.  Encouragement is all that is required with positive
comments on their work.

When creating art we don’t know where it begins and where it ends but we should
enjoy playing with trial and error without the fear of failure.

Happy with their masterpiece

There are many web sites that will give lots of ideas for arts and crafts for children.
There is really no need to go to a lot of expense to get children started with an art
project.  Why not go for a walk and collect leaves, grass, small sticks for use in a collage.

Always keep supplies of:
White paper
buy generic viagra Coloured paper
Paints
Paint brushes
Craft glue (large tub or tube)

Children love to paint and if you have older children, you could encourage them to
sketch out their picture before adding paint.  Perhaps they would like to pick out
an object from the home and draw this.  Again, encouragement is very important,
let them draw what they see and there should be lots of praise along the way.

Contemporary wall art

March 4, 2011 under Contemporary wall art

Contemporary and classic home decor

The contemporary canvas art I have created, which also include
the kids bedroom designs has its own individual style which will
complement many different styles. If you have a minimalist
approach to home decor, unusual and colourful wall art will bring
the room to life and the room will have a more ’cosy’ feel.

If your home decor style is more traditional, don’t feel that you
have to continue this style throughout , a combination of traditional
and contemporary can work really well together. A mix of old and new,
(if done well), in my opinion is one of the best looks in interior design.

Texture has a visual quality - the combination of light and dark, the layering of colour, tone and pattern -that brings vitality, interest and imagination in the decor of your home.  Pattern can be called visual texture but choosing and co-ordinating it is often confusing as the possibilities are endless.

Harmony is easily acheived if you begin with a single colour or piece of fabric, and add toning patterns and textures. It is difficult to imagine how patterns can work in

a room from small sample squares so try and go for larger pieces of fabric and take time to gather a multitude of swatches before deciding what is right for you.

Wall art in the home can work really well, choose wall art that is the right size for the wall it is intended for and choose colours that will co-ordinate or add contrast in the room.

Decorating kids bedrooms

March 4, 2011 under Decorating kids bedrooms

If you are planning to decorate a childs bedroom you will obviously want the end
result to be loved by who’s bedroom it is. So get an idea from them on what
colours they like, look at wall art together and take into consideration storage and
practical needs.  With younger children they will probably be into a particular
character but my advice would be to avoid buying curtains, wallpaper etc around
this character and just incorporate it with soft toys, games etc.  You will usually
find that they will love many characters they see on TV and decorating a whole
bedroom based on one character will be a mistake as it won’t be long before
they are into something else.  I would also avoid buying matching bedlinen and curtains, it may be tempting as it seems the easy way to decorate, however creating a more individual look will be give the best results.
TIP: Go for plain bedding then add

layers with throws or blankets in a mixture of spots/stripes/patterned.

Unique wall art will give your home individual style

Handmade and hand painted 3d wall art

Welcome to the Craft on Canvas blog which will give a ‘behind the scenes’ look at a business that has been started out of a love of home interiors. It will also give tips and advice on how to achieve a great look in a room without spending a fortune.

I started Craft on Canvas with the aim of creating unique room decor for those who want to give their home an individual look. The wall art I create is handmade and hand painted using artist quality materials.

I am not a trained interior designer but have a passion for art and home interiors, I love to find unusual accessories that make a room special and individual. If you are looking for something unusual and unique there are many designer/makers in the UK producing some beautiful products that you wouldn’t find on the high street and my blog will show some of the products available and where

to buy.  Although I don’t tend to follow trends and go with what’s in fashion I still like to keep up to date on styles and colours.

The tips and advice I suggest on my blog are simple, easy steps that can make a real difference to a room.

Please visit my website and browse the designs I have created.

Enjoy my blog and please feel free to make any comments.  If you have any suggestions on what you would like to see on my blog, please let me know.

Why I love creating

March 3, 2011 under Uncategorized

I have a passion for home interiors and I love to find unusual pieces for the home
that create an individual look.  When I start to create a new design I look at an
interior and decide what would look good in that particular room taking many
things into consideration.  I enjoy deciding on the colours and the challenge of
coming up with a new design.
I am sure there are many different reasons why we love crafting or creating
and it will vary depending on the actual craft one is doing.  However, many of
us do it for the enjoyment of creating something from scratch, thinking of an
idea and watching it develop into something they are completely happy with.
If given as a gift or sold at a fair it is wonderful to see someone appreciating
something you have created.
I love the excitement, the apprehension, the challenge, I also love the
variation of painting, cutting, sewing that is involved with my artwork.
I love to involve my children, asking them to draw some new designs and
colouring them in, they give me some great ideas and they know their
opinions are important.
I am sure I am not alone when I say that I get very frustrated when
something does not work in the way I had imagined, yet I cannot quite
pinpoint the reason why it does not work.  It may be weeks before it occurs to
me why I am not 100% happy with a particular design, thankfully I am pretty
patient which is important when it comes to attention to detail.  However, the
enjoyment outweighs the frustrations and overcoming a challenge
gives a lot of satisfaction.

Complement the look with cushions

March 3, 2011 under Complement the look

Add colour with cushions
Cushions will add texture and colour to a room.  If you feel like having a change or if a room is looking a little bland, adding lovely cushions to a sofa or chair

skin care products

can uplift a room. Look at the room with ‘new’ eyes and decide what colour you would like to see in the room, maybe a combination of two or three colours but don’t go over the top, you need to look around the room, have you got patterned curtains? If so, go for plain or simply decorated cushions that will not clash with other patterns in the room.

Handmade heart of flowers cushion
If a room has been put together well with individual style, you can achieve a  ‘designer look’ which will look great.  Complementing wall art with cushions
will allow the designer look to follow through a room.

If you would like to see a cushion to complement one of my wall art designs
please let me know as I hope to bring a wider choice of cushions to the collection.

Ideas for decorating a nursery

March 3, 2011 under Ideas for a nursery

Here are some ideas for decorating a nursery, the decor should be clean and simple using wall art etc to add texture

and colour.

Bunting is so easy to make and adds a lovely touch to a
nursery. Many types of material, patterned or plain, can
be used to make Bunting.  Cut lots of triangular shapes and
sew onto a length of ribbon.  Leave a gap of approx. 1 inch
between each flag.

Pretty handmade bunting

Shelving - Add shelving 10 inches or so below the ceiling around
the room and this is a great way of displaying christening gifts or
for keepsakes  etc.  It is extra storage and also
adds an unusual touch to a room.  Using long lengths
of white wood that is easy to clean is ideal.

Go dotty in a nursery by adding spots to a wall, half a wall or as a border.
This is easy to create by using a round sponge applicator (can be found
in craft shops) by covering the sponge in a thin layer of emulsion and
applying to the wall using a little pressure.  Space the spots out evenly
(not too close) and use a contrasting colour.

Decorating kids bedrooms – before you start

Storage for toys
Before you start

storage for toys

1. Sort toys into storage boxes (invest in some large and small stacking containers)
giving unused items to charity.
2. Keep related items together and easily labelled, using small containers or
bags for small items
Once you have a bedroom organized, it will be easier to tackle the decorating.

TIP
: I find rotation of toys a great way of keeping kids happy. This is great if
you are limited for space and have lots of toys.
Just put some toys away in storage boxes and transfer to the loft/garage/shed,
leave here for 2 or 3 months.  When you bring them out again, your child will
happily play with the toys as if they are new!  You can then transfer other toys
to the storage and leave these ’new’ toys for him to play with.
Do this as often or as little as you prefer.

Uncluttered space will allow a child more room to play and if all toys/games
are organized into containers it will be easy enough for them to get the
container and play and put everything back when they are done(much easier for parents too!).

Some storage containers can be stacked
on top of one another and with colours to fit in with the decor,
these containers can be anywhere in a room but the space will
still look organized and tidy.
